do you associate ferris wheels and hot air balloons with the early 2010s?
i'm very curious. i do. i remember, most of the time when i was on the internet back then, ferris wheels and hot air balloons were everywhere. especially in that particular sepia-ish filter. so, they're very nostalgic for me now. i've wanted to create a layout based on such images for a long time.
and now i did!
at first, i tried converting woodlouse's grid code to friendrewind, but it had poor results for my usual structure. i kept the general template (without all my display:nones) in a google doc, though, if i were to ever return to it. for a couple of days, i had something simple, while i stepped back and thought about i wanted. so then i remembered everything listed above, made a jaejoong header (struggled for a good two hours cuz the colors kept coming out weird), and then put together the code. owl city lyrics are one it for extra nostalgia n whimsy points. i'm happy with it.
but back to the topic at hand. ferris wheels and hot air balloons... why?
well, there's one thing between them: summer! summer vacations, summer memories, all the melancholia and nostalgia that comes with them. there's also something about being in the air, above ground. perhaps it's somewhere all your responsibilities and pains can't reach you, at least for a time. and that also connects to summer-- how it's supposed to be the one time for you to relax and not have to worry about homework or extracurriculars as much.
and i don't know about you guys, but there's a sort of whimsy in a lot of early 2010s stuff. bokeh and sparkles over everything, all the images of paper stars and lyrics written in notebooks. it's weirdly hopeful. and average. in this current era of the internet, i don't think a lot of people are satisfied with average. there's always something going to the extreme.

i hadn't really associated the early 2010s with ferris wheels and hot air balloons, but it makes so much sense now that i think about it. i'm sure a layout based on those themes would look really nice! the early 2010s were full of optimism and joy, and i miss it sm ㅠ_ㅠ i guess we have the millennials to thank for it, lol. i'm happy i got to live through such a time!
and i agree, those early years were super whimsical~ it felt like nothing could go wrong. and now we're here... so many people on the internet are incredibly cruel (for no reason btw), ai is taking over, and the annoying orange keeps waking up. it sometimes feels like all the magic is lost!!!! </3
lolz, we do have the millennials to thank for that. i feel as if a lot of us (gen z) became jaded faster. but at least we have the memories of millennials having a good time, and thus we did too, sorta. *insert stomp clap hey here*
it does, sometimes (also waiting for when annoying orange shuts eyes for good COME ON ALREADY!!!!!!!). but i think there's still hope. that's all we have in times like these, really. and each other. looking at all the ways people in my community help each other, even just gathering and sharing resources, it means there's still hope somewhere. i wish it took faster for things to change, and i hope we don't just go back to the previous status quo, and go further. but i like to think it's still possible within our lifetimes. idk.

that being said. there's so much overhaul we have to do so that we don't get in positions like these again, and who knows how long that would take on top of all this. and that doesn't even cover all the social conditioning that's been happening for decades, and what's been going on with education (books bans, history being whitewashed, libraries losing funding). i hate how we're forced to drag our feet because the ones in power are all old and / or rich.
