an eye for good food

here's the second post, as promised!

i wanted to briefly ramble about a mobile game i used to love: the tale of food. i already talked about food fantasy on here before, i think.

slightly similar to food fantasy, it was a game that personified foods in a turn-based rpg. it was more grind-y than food fantasy, though, and didn't have as many automated elements. i only got through... what, 2 chapters / worlds in ttof? while i got through close to 5 in ff. to be honest, though, the story actually wasn't of much importance to me, because of that grind-y aspect. i enjoyed taking care of my restaurant and learning new recipes for it, and fulfilling other tasks more.

and by other tasks, i mean quick dungeon visits, customizing my profile and my character's home, reading through the character stories, etc... it had a lot of side story gameplay that i really appreciated, as ff didn't really have that. at the same time, ff didn't demand as much time from a player; so it trades off, i guess.

my favorite food soul (i think that's a ff term... i forget what they're called in this game, it's been so long) was squirrel fish. i know he's a beginner food soul, but he's the classic stoic knight figure with a soft heart. i can't help but fall for it every time... i also remember really wanting sichuan hotpot and shunde raw fish, but i never got them. the rarest food souls i got were chuyi flower cake and steam doll orchestra, of which the latter had a special opening cutscene every time you clicked on his card. my irl friend liked shredded jerky when i showed her the game.

teehee, here's squirrel fish right here...

by far, my favorite thing about this game was the artwork. it was all so delicate and beautiful. really, everything. and it had lovely color palettes with soft colors and iridescent overlays, so many buttons looked like crystals. i wish i could tell you more about the story, but i barely played through it, so i never got a good grasp on what was happening. i think it had something to do with proving that you could take care of your parents' old restaurant, though.

you likely noticed that i've been using past tense when talking about this game, though. that's because the global servers shut down last year. but i didn't know until after it happened, so i never got to say goodbye...................
