lighthouse in the sky

in my last post, i think i mentioned i've been listening to a lot of daphne loves derby, right? i've really liked them for a couple of years now, but i don't think i've done a total deep dive on them yet, so.

let's get started~ (essay incominggggg!!!!!!)

the first daphne loves derby song i ever listened to was kirby, which i came across on a recommended song shuffle. and i fell. in love. immediately. i loved the sound, which made me think of fall and coziness, yet all the melancholy that came with saying goodbye to warmth. decaying connections, even decaying layers of the self. i loved the lyrics, too. fantastical and distant, poetic, full of longing and love.

my favorite line of lyrics of all time (thus far) comes from that song, too: i'll trade my veins for your nerves. my spacehey status most of the time! i feel that it represents me pretty well. i could write a whole essay on that line alone, but this post isn't the right one for it.

but there's also something so. fairytale-y about it. i know that doesn't make much sense on its own, but let me explain. because of all the metaphors within the lyrics, and in some cases hyperbole (which i'm referring to in a positive way), to me, the lyrics describe a completely different world. stories, tales, that condense the themes and feelings into their cores. once that core is identified, it can be stretched and used in so many different ways, but we can still get it. it can be abstract, but the intuition remains.

and daphne loves derby stretches those themes in really beautiful ways, that feel so deeply connected to their era. kirby, as mentioned before, with doomsday visions. you versus the sea, with a lonely defender against great storms, in vain. a year on an airplane, with air travel and beasts (this one feels particularly steampunk to me). i don't know. something about the way it feels modern, yet still fantastical, recalls to me how the mid-2000s were filled with a lot of urban fantasy media. and of course, such often connected to teenagers / youth, of which many made up the emo subculture (which i would say daphne loves derby is a part of, or at least adjacent and closely related to).

thus, daphne loves derby is not only an illustrative tome of emotion and magic, but also a worthy chapter within a wider study of alternative subcultures and trends in general. the way everything about their existence comes together should not so be understated... yet it is.

anyway. feels sorta weird having a navbar on my blog again, but i actually really like it. it functions as the search for if u wanna find particular terms, which i haven't been able to do in a while, and i missed the ability. tried searching for whether or not i wrote a post on daphne loves derby before, and while it appears i haven't, i did find a cool little post i wrote about the concept of web celebrity. like ok... professional columnist over here in high school... lolz.

goes for a lot of my old posts, i think. i used to be a lot more analytic in regards to the topics i covered, and i used to cover a wider variety of things. one time i talked about the quote "you're always loved more than you know." another time i rambled about silver vs. gold jewelry, card-making, genres in my mind, etc...

but i also had a lot of shorter posts, that were just a few sentences of an idea i had. or even just what happened that day. i think it's because i had a lot more akanishi images stowed away for use, so i just threw them around the blog like confetti. but now that i don't have as many as i'd like, i sort of have to ration them... and i used to introduce myself for some reason on a lot of them lolz? like "eugene here :)" or "eugene's back :)" even though my blog was private at the time... who was i talking to...........

anyway. i don't know where i was going with this. it's just sorta funny to see how much can change in just a year.
