eep, lots of socializing today...
i went out with my siblings! we hung around a pizza place / bar (tho i got myself boba) for like. 5-6 hours, just chatting. i didn't talk much (i rarely do), but it was really nice to hang out with them. we've never done that, like, ever. and it sorta cleared up a lot of things between our childhoods n stuff, so that was interesting. if not somewhat uncomfortable. (16 and 11 year age gaps between me n them makes everything awkward lolz)
my brother also dropped off the vga monitor my sister-in-law's friend was giving away. it's actually massive KHDAKJSHDF, longer than 2 feet... had to clear out my entire desk, but def worth it.
so, the moment of truth. the monitor's on the desk, it's plugged into the wall, the computer's plugged into the wall. i connect the vga cable to the tower, then to the monitor. the monitor's already on, and i press the startup button on the tower................
SUCCESSFUL DISPLAY!!!!!!! it shows perfectly, in color. low resolution, but what else would you expect lolz. it doesn't seem that any data's corrupted, all the icons load in...
until. i try to move the mouse, and press a few keys with the keyboard. nothing. i try switching the ports they're connected to, front to back and cycle again. nothing. i try using my dad's mouse for work, as the keyboard and mouse i'm using are for apple, so maybe it's apple's stupid exclusivity again. no, it doesn't work either...
yet another block in my quest to reactivate the pc. but it's on! it's aliiiiiiivvvveeeeeee~!!!!! and you can actually see it. it didn't open up with a disk error or anything. but it did have some sort of seek error? i think? i didn't take a photo of it, and i don't remember the specifics, but. it doesn't seem to be interfering with the way it's functioning critically? like, the computer isn't completely frozen or blue-screening me. it opened up the defender app on boot (not that there was anything harmful on the computer, i think the service just expired yk). that's good. i'll try and open it again soon to get a photo.
or maybe it is freezing? i'm not sure. it'll stay on for like, 5-10 minutes without input, and then just go black. but that's not it shutting down, it's just on standby. unfortunately i have to yank the power cord to turn it off, though, since it can't respond to anything... i feel so bad, it feels so violent ㅠㅠ like having to hold down the power button on a crashed console...
my sister-in-law offered to find a windows-specific keyboard n mouse for me to use, but i think i first want to see if i should use a converter for the apple accessories. see, instead of using usb ports back then, it was more common for mice and keyboards to have ps/2 connectors. green for mice, orange / purple for keyboards. thinking back, i realized that i'd never seen the computer with usb attachments, so i'm gonna try and get myself an adapter first.
as for the monitor, i dunno what i'm gonna do it. probs use it to play video games! or maybe i'll get an hdmi converter for this laptop, and use it as a bigger screen like cool computer ppl do~ or or, i'll get myself a new pc. get a couple of usb-c to usb-a adapters too, and it'd be good to go...
eh. we'll see what happens.

hello eugeneeee!! that sounds like such a meaningful day >:3 hanging out with your siblings and clearing up old stuff is huge, even (or especially) when it's a bit awkward. i'm really glad you got that time with them.
and OMGGGG IT IS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's the biggest win, seriously. the no-input mystery is a classic quest, but you've got the diagnostic skills for it~ (those old towers really loved their dedicated ports). the fact that it boots and displays at all is amazing news. you're so close!! (the mental image of a massive vintage monitor on your desk is incredibly cool).
aww, yay!! spending quality time with ur siblings is always nice. i’m glad u got to hang out with them, especially since u guys don’t always get the opportunity to. i hope u all had a great time!
YAYYY THE MONITOR WORKS!!! it’s such an exciting feeling booting up old electronics. and when they work perfectly fine still… loveeee it. can’t wait to see what u decide to do with the new setup~!!
