some time ago, my mother used to be subscribed to a japanese snack box subscription.

i say used to, as according to her, the company went out of business because of costs sometime around the beginning of the pandemic. it was a real shame; when she received her monthly box, it was always a sweet note for the day. for the week. for the rest of the month, until another box came and repeated the happiness to no end, it seemed.

each one came wrapped in furoshiki, with a soft pattern that corresponded to the season. and of course, there would be a little sheet of paper that explained the treats and their places of origin, how they tasted and their popularity / significance to history and the community. each one also had some artwork on the back, making it sort of like a postcard.

and then of course, the treats themselves. there were usually about twelve, if memory serves. my mom would always be excited for potential senbei or matcha treats-- those are her favorite. and if she liked a treat, she made sure to open its package carefully and save it for later, if she could find it again. i don't know what happened to those.

there was this one treat i really loved, a log of vanilla sandwich cookies that weren't too sweet. i don't remember trying much else, but generally middle school is a fuzzy time, so i don't really expect much in that regard.

i don't know why i suddenly thought to share this here. anyway.
