dearest pumpkin!

i've been overthinking something a lot recently. and my unexpected overthinking soundtrack thus far? the indie rock band a great big pile of leaves.

i'll preface this now: it's a very... millenial band? in a sense. but i really don't mean that in a bad way! to me, their music is deeply comforting and nostalgic. it reminds me of hanging out with my older sister in our old home...

really, though. you can hear it in the lyrics and some of the particular sounds-- you can tell it's straight from the millenial (late 2000s-early 2010s) indie era. if it was up to me, i'd be playing them in an indie bookstore with warm lighting (including fairy lights) all the time, alongside ttng. (i guess that's a question for you guys, too-- what would you play in an indie bookstore? lolz.)

the main releases i'm listening to in particular are the fiery works part i and have you seen my prefrontal cortex? their acoustic ep boom! is also pretty nice, but it's comprised of songs from the aforementioned albums, so i'm not really counting it here.

between both of them, there's a couple of themes you can pick up on: becoming an adult and the incessant struggles that come with it (or should i say... adulting...), working yourself to your limits (+ burnout?), and yearning. and other relationship things, as is the territory of most songs. they also have some goofy songs here and there, which i sometimes make an extra category for just cuz.

i'll give you examples of each.

- becoming / being an adult: for this one, i'll choose great fun. the second line actively talks about getting more hours at work, and the singer celebrates being able to have full dental coverage again. it's a realistic song; like, yeah. it is great fun to be able to visit the doctor and know you'll be at least a little more secure financially.

- burnout: i can't talk about a great big pile of leaves without mentioning their most popular song, workeatsleep. the title alone shows the lack of space between them, the lack of time in many people. work, eat, sleep. it's a constant cycle, and nothing changes. the singer laments being unable to read, or sing, or rest much because of the cycle. it's deeply relatable-- i had it on repeat when i had my summer class and i was consumed with writing and korean homework all the time. i suppose it won't get better from here on out...

- yearning: vampires in love! i wrote about this one before, briefly. it's so cute. a spaghetti picnic date sounds adorable, and vampires are the cherry on top for me... i love a cutesy vampire romance (shoutout to the vampire kisses series, LOLZ. i used to eat those up, i thought raven and alexander were soooooo cute. at least back then. haven't read it in a while.)

- goofing off!!!!!!!!!!: i will gobble you up!, also from the same album as the song above. it's a bizzarely fun album. this one in particular involves the singer calling the listener all manner of food-related pet names, yearning for them. not entirely sure if it's healthy (pun not intended), though. he mentions how he's on a hunt for "nutritious eats", perhaps a healthy relationship, but keeps getting tricked. and he calls the listener red velvet cake and gingerbread. perhaps the relationship is tempting, but not necessarily something that will be good in the long run. but then again, too much of any food can be a bad thing. so.

i meant to give multiple songs for each type, but this post is already full of rambling, so... i will leave it here for now. if you're interested in other examples, though, i can give some~

ah, and! i put together another blogger layout based on their music... i want to change it to it already, but i wanna make sure this layout gets enough time to shine, if that makes sense. i think you guys will really like it, though. i'm already in love with it.

weirdly, i think both agbpiw (i'm not typing out their entire name anymore, i've already done it a million times today lolz) and ttng are autumn bands. but maybe that's just because i'm listening to them as fall is approaching. agbpiw is the cozy side of fall, that smells like cinnamon and trying to get extra sleep. ttng is the cold side of fall, rain and decaying leaves on the ground, grey skies and fog.

do you guys have any fall artists? alongside them, i like to listen to paramore, pierce the veil, and daphne loves derby in the fall. and the goo goo dolls. and lifehouse.

sotd: i will gobble you up! by a great big pile of leaves

i miss the millenial optimism era. the world felt so bright and full of possibility! what happeneddd TT (i don't listen to much indie music, but i think naoko gushima's music would be perfect for a bookstore. her music is very smooth, and includes elements of jazz).

the variety in the messages of each song is nice! there's always something different to listen to. becoming a real adult is kinda scary, but i hope that i can have full insurance coverage and a good-paying job someday. then i'll have something good to sing about, too! ^_^

it does sound like a fall band, hehe. big piles of leaves are the face of autumn! on top of that, millennials also remind me of fall. i'm thinking of the beanies and scarves they would wear, lol.

i wouldn't necessarily say that i have fall artists, but i do associate some artists with specific times in my life. for example, i associate yukika (she's retired now, i miss herrr) with the winter of 2020 bc i listened to her music a bunch back then! i also associate s.e.s. with summer of 2024 and my transition into university bc i was listening to them constantly back then. thus, whenever i go back and listen to artists i've not heard for a while, i think back on past times.

ooooooo, very good bookstore choice! :0 most of the bookstores i go to play jazz pretty often, so she would fit right in~ also EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!! fingers crossed we'll all do well in adulthood...

that's what i was thinking too, especially with the color palette on most of their album covers lolz. also u're so right abt the beanies and scarves... a good chunk of my beanie and scarf collection came from my millenial sister, lolz. they're still very cozy!

ooooo i see! very cool :0 i did say paramore is a fall artist of mine, but i think i also heavily associate them with specific high school falls and winters. i used to listen to decode and i caught myself on repeat when i was stressed.
