memory of...

i just realized that i never wrote up a full review of beach boys, even though i finished it all the way back in... what, january? february? of 2025...

to give a brief recap, two guys stay at a bed & breakfast by the beach. one's a permanent slacker looking for a place to stay and find meaning (hiromi), another's a workaholic who needs to catch a break and rediscover himself (kaito). they work at the b&b and become friends of sorts, and bond with the folks who own the bed & breakfast. the bed & breakfast is struggling, though, which becomes apparent in the latter half of the series. the owner is unwell and prone to injury, and his granddaughter is still young and in school. but, it's apparent she wants to keep the place open and stay there, especially if the new guys stay.

it's a very chill series, heartwarming and insightful all the same. the carefree attitudes of summer combine with the heaviness of time passing in a way that isn't over-the-top, and makes you think about how you approach your own work-life balance, or what fulfillment looks like. what endings look like, at times.

the thing i don't like, though, are the strange comments towards the granddaughter at times. people try to excuse it by saying it's the '90s, but it's gross and unnecessary in any age. and they really leave a bitter taste for what is otherwise a well-written show.

have you guys seen this drama before?

... between this and the book i talked to you guys about earlier, and other videos of sorts, i've been sort of obsessed about bed & breakfasts for a couple of years now. for some reason, it's hard for me to wrap my head around them. the level of interaction, and how you feel more integrated with the owner or other visitors... it seems like a lot, but also somewhat cozy, and a bit risky, but overall i'm really... perplexed? i see the appeal, i think, and i wonder how unique each one in the world is. maybe the area i'm in is just too individualistic, so that such a concept feels that way. i don't know.

in other news. i also had to get firefox for my korean class, since it relies on a program that would require flash on safari. but as we all know, flash has been gone for some time now... but honestly, i'm having a lot of fun on firefox. now my browser is super cute, with falling pastel pixelated stars :3

eugene!!!!! i’ve been meaning to watch beach boys but i’m holding off until i finish long vacation; two characters from there show up and i just know i’ll start judging them by their other roles, lolol. the premise sounds so charming though~ sign me up! (and with takashi sorimachi in it, i’m absolutely watching because i really like his acting) >:D

one thing i really appreciate about 90s jdoramas is how they're not afraid to let a scene linger; there's a quiet confidence in the storytelling that doesn't feel the need to rush from beat to beat. modern dramas (not all, ofc) often trade that groundedness for something snappier, and it makes me wonder if shrinking attention spans or shifting production styles play a role in that :/ anywho, i love shows with realistic pacing!!!!! i wanna feel like i'm in the show if that makes sense--- OKAY I'M DONE!

i’ll keep an ear out for those weird comments you mentioned........ i hate when a lovely show gets tainted by stuff like that, like come on... :(

also! i get the fascination; b&bs sound cosy in theory but i think staying in one alone feels like too much intimacy with strangers in a small space. maybe that's the appeal for some(?), but i think i'd need liquid courage before sharing a breakfast table with people i don't know.... hehehe....

and omg, firefox with falling pastel stars sounds adorable!! a mandatory browser switch that turned into a win~ yipeee!

great review as always eugene, talk to u soon~

i've never seen this drama before, but it sounds like a cozy story. (besides the comments... that's definitely strange!!) it's nice when a piece of media makes you think about things more deeply. i usually get really sad as the summer comes closer to ending, but a better way to look at it might be that a new season is coming, along with new opportunities, experiences, and less heat, hopefully..

the concept of a bed & breakfast seems sweet but also a bit awkward to me. but to be fair, i've never stepping foot in one so what do i know? maybe it's actually a really nice experience, and i know some people may enjoy that closeness.

your firefox browser sounds so cuteeee!!! i hope you enjoy using it :D

wait, really? that's interesting~ if u're able to watch it, i'd love to read a review. and yes!!! i feel like that's for a lot of things nowadays, in the social media era. something something instant gratification. but ah well.

i could try and go back through the episodes to see where the weird comments are, to warn you, if you want.

that's fair! thinking back on it now, it sort of reminds me of overnight class trips... i don't think i'd mind it much if i had other friends with me.

i love that!!! i sort of see the end of summer as the same way, but together with spring, if that makes sense. like we have the spring / summer life season, and the fall / winter life season, with different priorities. i also wish fall had less heat, but i don't think fall is even fall anymore due to climate change. it sucks... but i hope this upcoming fall is cooler for you! i see the heat that's going on over there. i hope you're staying hydrated and cool these days.

same here. i feel that if you go with a group of friends, it wouldn't be so weird. or at the very least, you'd feel safer with them.

thank u!!! it's been a treat so far, ehehe.
