eep, finally friday~
my korean professor called me aside after class today and for a moment i swear i was going to start crying because i thought she was gonna be mad with me for not knowing enough, but she just said she was concerned with how i gelled with the difficulty ㅠㅠ which was honestly a massive relief and i'm really thankful, because ough.
she recommended for me to read through the upcoming lesson and peek in on the 1a class, to see for myself which one i should stay in, which i think i'll do. but also idk. part of me is nagging my brain to continue studying mandarin, since i started learning it in an academic format, college classes might gel better. i also really loved mandarin *_* it was fun to write and practice the tones over and over. so, i'm thinking about which one i want to study in school, and which one to self-study... back to square one! but that's okay.
ah, that brings me to what i wanted to talk about! eep.
i saw a video yesterday, arguing that sometimes, the language one grows up with as their first / native language, is actually not the one that truly reflects their soul. it could be easier to communicate one's most innermost thoughts in another language. it wasn't said in a scientific way, more in a metaphysical one, but it was still really interesting. i thought about the idea that for various cultural reasons connected to the language / the way the person learned it, there could be certain unconscious rules that stop them from speaking in a way that truly expresses them.
it also made me think of how some words in other languages can't be translated to other ones. we can only have descriptions of them, analogies / close relatives of those words, etc. it really shows what a language emphasizes in the lives of the people who speak it, what they feel deserves a word all of its own. natural / physical phenomena, feelings, conditions... i think it's really beautiful.
the same goes for names too! many of them reflect the beauties found in the world. isn't that lovely? this world is so beautiful, you are part of the world, and your beauty is like that of [insert object here]. we are all connected.
*cut to me falling to my knees in the middle of the grocery store because i thought about the way language shows care for the world and for humanity and the importance of communication despite the adversity against emotional vulnerability in the modern era. if those in positions of power today could choose, they'd probably erase the world love. but it would emerge again as something else, defined by others for the sake of humanity because it is at the core of all things*

hii eugene!! seeing what the 1a class is like sounds like it could be very helpful, but it’s all up to u and what u believe is best! also, i didn’t know u studied mandarin. that’s so cool!!! it’s one of my favorite languages to listen to.
ohh, what an interesting perspective. i never really thought about language and self in that way before, but it kinda makes sense! especially when u brought up how some words across languages have no direct translation. speaking in a different language allows for the communication of more thoughts, ideas, and expression of self.
and names!!! they are so great. i used to enjoy looking up my name and my family members’ names to see where they originated from the meaning. it was so fun!
the world is so beautiful ~ ❤︎
hi naraaaa :D thank u!!! it was in sophomore year n junior year tho, so i'm sorta rusty. it is really beautiful to listen to! and write. and read. eep~
yes!!!!!!!!! the culture you might grow up in can be familiar to you, and can form some of the frameworks of the way you see the world, but some parts could be easier expressed along the lines of other cultures or languages. it's really interesting~
aaaaa me too!!!!! in gen looking through naming websites is so fun. the world is so beautiful indeed~
hi eugeneeee!!! :] first of all, i'm so, so glad your professor was kind and concerned and not mad :3 that must have been such a huge relief... her suggestion to peek into the 1a class is really smart. it lets you feel the difference~
honestly? the idea of studying one formally and self-studying the other sounds like a perfect, balanced solution!!!! :0 you get the academic structure for one and pure passion-fueled fun for the other!!!! (^.^)
and WOW, that whole thought about a language not reflecting your soul... it's such a beautiful, metaphysical way to think about it. it makes sense though; some feelings just find a better home in certain words. the fact that some concepts are untranslatable is proof of how specific and deep our connections to the world can be. it really is beautiful~~
(BROWN EYED GIRLS MENTIONED????????? HOW COME IS A TOTAL BOP!!!!! GAAAAAAHHHH!!!)
hi koiiiiii :3 sorry i'm getting back to this late ㅠㅠ it was such a huge relief. n eep yes!!! one for fun, and one to be serious 3:<
I KNOW RIGHTTTTTT, and i love how u worded that, "proof of how specific and deep our connections to the world can be." like... sometimes the world really is what you make it, despite everything. beauty in the eye of the beholder sort of things, but beauty can be everywhere. idk.
(OMG YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!! it has been stuck in my head ALL DAY.)
