100 questions for webmasters

i found this questionnaire thingy from some nekoweb folks, and it seems pretty cool, so i'm gonna answer it~ 

1. please introduce yourself.
1. hi, i'm eugene! :)
2. how long have you been making websites?
1. about a year now, since 2024. though, i've had this blogger account since 2023.
3. what got you into webmastery?
1. i used to like learning how to code in elementary school (block coding as well as javascript), but then stopped. then i found out about spacehey, but wanted something more personal and customizable. so, websites were naturally the next step!
4. what kind of websites are you most interested in?
1. my friends' blogs, first and foremost. i'm also interested in layout and resource sites, since i like looking at everyone's web art. and sites with quizzes and shrines!!!
5. what's your workflow? do you plan websites out thoroughly, or do you come up with the design as you go along?
1. i like to have a solid concept first, before i do anything. but i don't give myself strict deadlines or anything. that ruins it for me~
6. please link to your biggest inspirations.
1. for my site(s)? i don't really have any, sorry.
7. what's your favorite part about making websites?
1. putting together the new css files~
8. and the thing you struggle with most?
1. actually committing to content... this blog and jinpudding are miracles, all things considered.
9. do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? or do you use different ones?
1. i like to keep the same layout, most of the time. it just makes things easier for me. but my newest site'll need a couple different layouts.
10. how confident are you with css?
1. pretty confident!
11. do you know how to correctly use dl?
1. the dl tag? i probs read about it when i looked through w3's html lessons, but i haven't used it. so, i guess not...
12. what is your favorite html element?
1. p
13. when making a new web page, what do you do first?
1. add the template from another existing page. or, if it's my blog, i set out the layout with one line of words and the sotd below. sets everything up~
14. do you know javascript?
1. some.
15. do you know php?
1. an itty bitty bit.
16. does your website have a theme that you stick to?
1. i often like to incorporate sweets into my designs. or photos of my favorite idols.
17. are you more focused on content or design?
1. design, ahaha...
18. do you own a domain name? if not, would you ever want to?
1. no, but i would love to some day.
19. what do you think of nostalgia-focused or retro websites?
1. that goes for a lot of websites, doesn't it...? i don't have any specific opinion.
20. is your html valid? do you even check?
1. i................ do not know. i haven't heard of html validation before. it would be a good practice to check, though, now that i know.
21. what are your opinions on buttons and banners?

23. if you started over again, would you make something similar or different?
1. if i ever had to start all over again i think i'd cry...!!! all my hard work............. i would make something similar.
24. are you envious of other people's websites?
1. no, not really.
25. what text editor do you use?
1. the provided text editor, ehehe...
26. why do you like that one?
1. i prefer to see my changes asap. plus, i didn't really know writing code in another service before uploading was the norm. since it's there, why not use it...? maybe it's just something i don't get.
27. do you host images on your web server, or another service?
1. depends on the image, and what i'm using it for. if it's for my sites, i stick them on the server. if it's for spacehey, i use postimages. i think i might have to find an alternative, though, sometimes when i open old image links i find they suddenly don't exist. at least i've kept all my stuff on canva.
28. what's your opinion on the neocities vs. nekoweb debate?
1. i didn't know there was one. no opinion, really, it depends on what the person wants. they do the same thing... i prefer nekoweb. it's easier for me to use, and the color palette is softer on the eyes (neocities dashboard eyestrain is real). not to mention, there's the cute site boxes, it has a zine...
29. how much server space would you estimate your site takes up?
1. a good few megabytes, i'm fairly sure. jinpudding currently takes up about 5. i think this one takes up 11?
30. do you keep local backups of your files?
1. i try to, but i get freaked out about the space i have on my computer. i should get a drive.
31. do you prefer simple or highly visible websites?
1. i prefer to keep my sites simple, but as a visitor, i don't really mind either.
32. do you stick to certain colors? is it intentional, or subconscious?
1. over the years, my layouts have had a lot of white and pink. i think it's a combination of both intention and subconscious. when i lean too far into one color, i flip back to the other.
33. have you ever thought about quitting? why?
1. no, i'm having a lot of fun here :)
34. do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
1. i have some online! not irl, though.
35. do people in your real life know about your website?
1. absolutely not!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they know i code, but. they don't know where i am in the web.
36. do you update your websites very often? how often is "very often?"
1. this blog, i update often. my outside sites not so much. i think very often would be every day.
37. the overall design, do you change it much? why or why not?
1. for this one, every few months or so. it just gets a little dull sometimes, i like changing up the graphics and motifs.
38. is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside-world-focused?
1. myself and hobbies! though, i wish i could share more about my outside world. i really wish my friends could be a part of it.
39. do you do web design professionally?
1. no, not right now.
40. if not, would you like to? what do you do for work?
1. i think i'd love to, especially for small / local businesses or creators. i'm currently a student, though i want to work.
41. do you communicate with other people much over email?
1. no. sometimes i wish i could, like an online penpal.
42. some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. do you keep social media outside of your website?
1. a few, yeah. youtube and spotify, but i want to move away from using both over time. i fear that may not be possible though, considering how much social stuff is dependent on social media profiles.
43. how about instant messengers?
1. slack, but only for music magazine stuff.
44. do you listen to music while working on your websites? if so, what do you listen to?
1. of course! i listen to a lot of perfume and electropop, it feels fitting. 
45. do you keep everything you make on one website, or multiple sites?
1. multiple sites, easier for me to organize things if they're in vastly different places that can't get confused.
46. do you keep your site to one topic?
1. my blog, no. i want to explore various things! but my sites, yeah. or else i'll get overwhelmed.
47. do you present your real self, or try to? or is it a persona?
1. my real self, definitely. it feels more real here than irl, which is a little scary to say, but it's true. it's really hard for me to talk to and connect to others irl, for various reasons.
48. have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
1. i mean, through spacehey, definitely!!! i don't think i've made any friends specifically from my blog or outside sites, though.
49. are you happy with the ways html and css currently work?
1. sure. i don't really push the limits of html or css much, so i don't think about how they could expand.
50. what are practices you think people should avoid?
1. when there's a lot of images that cover links or cause the page to load for a million years and turn my device into a hot piece of metal... it's not that i think they shouldn't exist at all, but it's hard for me to navigate. also flashing lights and colors, or colors that don't contrast well and make text hard to see. i wanna get to know you!!!!!!!
51. what about practices people should do more?
1. aside from the things listed above, i don't have any qualms with how people code their sites. maybe i'd suggest to compress the images? as long as it doesn't affect the quality. i just know it takes longer to load and takes up more space on servers.
52. do you use a lot of semantic html? or do you prefer generic?
1. i think i use more generic html? because, especially with divs, you can change it all yourself in css and not have to worry about the presets.
53. do you consider different browsers?
1. not really.
54. what's your preferred browser? can you convince someone to use it?
1. safari, but that's just because it's what my computer comes with. if i had to choose a browser other than it (due to its exclusivity), i would choose firefox. i try to consider privacy, how it runs, etc. (chrome has always been slow and awkward for me)
55. what os are you on?
1. macos sequoia. the updates have been slowing my computer down lately...
56. do you have a strong opinion on os?
1. not really. except, i see how much of a dumpster fire windows 11 appears to be.
57. are your websites mobile friendly?
1. i try to make them mobile friendly, though a lot of the things i display on desktop will have to disappear because of the size.
58. what are your thoughts on autoplay?
1. boooooooo tomato tomato tomato tomato. the day i figured out how to make the music player not autoplay was a massive relief. i don't want to scare anyone, and i don't want to be jumpscared either.
59. what are your thoughts on webrings?
1. cute!!! :3
60. do you have any web shrines? what do you like to see on web shrines?
1. i used to have a yabuki one. when it comes to them, i like to see web graphics like stamps, buttons, banners, etc.
61. are your websites cliche, in your opinion?
1. ............... i don't know what that means, sorry. i'm inclined to say no, though, because that's a weird way to describe a website. or a hobby in general. 
62. what is your ideal website? do you strive for it?
1. i don't have an ideal website. it's art, after all, at least to me. it would be weird for me to define a piece of art as "ideal..."
63. are you an artist? do you draw or design your own assets?
1. yes~ i design the things i use, though haven't drawn yet. i really want to, though. i thought of doing a hand-drawn spacehey layout once. handwriting reveal, lolz...
64. what are your favorite resource sites?
1. i like to look at tumblr for resource blogs, especially the ones that preserve cyworld and korean old web graphics. i linked to some of them on the 2000nyeondae group, they're super cool.
65. is there a habit you can't get away from, no matter how hard you try?
1. i wish i could stop loading an image url in without forgetting to change the width. every time i open the page it's like "huh???? why is it that-- oh."
66. what's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
1. start slow. it's okay to not have every single element planned out, and it's okay if your site doesn't look like how you envisioned at first. there's lots of resources out there for you, from official code masters and fellow indie webmasters. also. computers do exactly as you tell them to-- they're algorithmic beings meant to solve problems with set solutions after all-- so be patient with yourself and your code. sometimes there's a lot of small tweaks behind making your website look the way you want it to, and it's okay to not get them all down all at once. the frustration is real, but so is the reward.
67. do you keep all your styling in css? or is there some inline...
1. i try to keep it all in the stylesheet, but there's some individual / situational changes that can only be made inline.
68. what do you think of frames layouts?
1. like, iframe? not a big fan. they load so slowly.
69. how about table based layouts?
1. jinpudding used to be table-based, until i learned to use flex. they're really awkward, but if you make it work, you make it work. i shouldn't judge.
70. do you subscribe to the ideas of one-column, two-column, and three-column layouts? do you use any of them?
1. ...? it's an easy categorization system to follow, for me. i've been making single-column layouts a lot for the past few months, but i want to do more two-column layouts nowadays.
71. do you spend longer on html or css?
1. html, definitely.
72. have you ever made a page with no css? it's useful for your thoughts.
1. no... times new roman on a personal site makes me shudder. times new roman is academics only!!!!!!!!!
73. do you find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
1. always. i should try and make website layouts, hm hm~
74. would you consider yourself a beginner, advanced, or somewhere in the middle?
1. somewhere in the middle. i always make lots of mistakes and definitely have much more room to grow. but i'm not where i was a year ago.
75. do you have a habit of looking at the source code of the websites you visit?
1. not really. it feels invasive for me to do so, if it's not actively stated to be okay. it's like trying to erase someone's drawing to see the sketch and layout lines beneath.
76. how did you learn how to make websites?
1. for html, mostly w3 schools, and trial and error. spacehey's my main practice point for css, and i mostly throw things at the wall until they stick.
77. do you ever force elements to do things they aren't supposed to?
1. i'm often tempted to. but i do want to learn how to do things properly, because doing it improperly is just a lot more code, to find workarounds.
78. thoughts on floating elements?
1. as in, the float property? i don't mind it. i used to use it on one of my spacehey layouts, which looked really nice.
79. what's your primary unit when measuring elements?
1. px
80. do you have a favorite font?
1. helvetica neue, specifically weight 300. really nostalgic~
81. would you run a website with another person? how would that work?
1. i've been thinking about this a lot lately. i would, even with a group, especially if it was focused on discussing the things we like. and i'm the vice-mod of the 2000nyeondae group alongside koi, which goes well. i just do style stuff, pretty much :p. imagine how cute it would be, to have a website with your partner... it would be so adorbs as a story, omg... ok i need to stop my brain now lolz.
82. do you surf the web to find new personal websites often?
1. when i'm updating my sites, then i browse. but i don't just try and search them in the browser, if that makes sense. it's not optimized for that sort of thing anymore...
83. do you bookmark other people's websites? how would you feel if someone bookmarked yours?
1. i don't have bookmarks displayed anymore, so i don't bookmark much of anything anymore. especially since i prefer to type in urls. if someone bookmarked mine, i'd feel honored.
84. what do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
1. i want people to be impressed with the graphics and color palettes. they're the things i focus on most in the first stages of creation, and without them everything goes wrong.
85. are you interested in technology outside of websites? do you collect?
1. yes!!! i don't collect though, because of money. or, lack thereof. but maybe that's a good thing.
86. how often and long are you online?
1. all the time, which i wish wasn't the case. but everything school-related is online, and the things and people i love are online, too, so...
87. who is your target audience?
1. i don't have one.
88. have you ever been interested in xhtml?
1. yeah, for the sake of my blog, alongside xml. but it's terrifying...
89. are you interested in programming outside of websites?
1. yeah, i want to learn more about the stuff that goes on between websites and servers. i want to learn jekyll as well.
90. what do you think of static site generators?
1. i'm not familiar with them.
91. do you keep a hit counter? why or why not?
1. no, they don't work well.
92. do you frequent forums? which ones?
1. i frequent the spacehey forums. especially the music and games ones. and the various group forums too~
93. do you write content directly in the editor, or do you draft it elsewhere first?
1. directly in the editor, so i can see the edits as soon as i can. if i can't have my computer out for whatever reason, though, i do write it in my notebook...
94. do you think you appear cool to others? do others say you're cool?
1. not really. i'm really awkward irl and, like i said before, can't talk much. but others have said i'm cool, and chill, and sweet. i'm really happy they see me that way. people used to call me intimidating before they got to know me, which sorta hurt lolz.
95. are you embarrassed of your old work? do you ever wipe things out of shame?
1. some of it. i have wiped things out of shame before, which i deeply regret now.
96. would you ever close down your website if you ran out of ideas? or would you archive it?
1. i would archive it. i've spent so much time and effort on these, i love them.
97. do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? or do you keep yourself pretty secret?
1. i think i do, but i don't think i reveal too much. the web is one of my only outlets.
98. are you willing to reveal your best online friends, and if they have websites?
1. nara and koi, of course. they're linked on the side-- nara's notebook and rewindnote respectively~
99. do you optimize the images on your website?
1. i try to turn them all into jpgs and make sure they're less than a megabyte. though, the former doesn't matter if the image is super small.
100. end! how do you feel after answering 100 questions?
1. weirdly exhausted... but, it was also interesting to think about these things for the first time.
